New Year’s Eve party invitation wording: 12 examples

A New Year’s Eve invitation says who is hosting, when the party starts and ends, where it is, what to wear, and who to RSVP to by when. Guests also want to know if kids are welcome and how to get home. Below are 12 examples to copy, from cozy to black tie.

What to include

Most guests get more than one invitation for the same night. Yours should answer the practical questions at a glance.

  • Who’s hostingYour names, or your family’s. Guests want to know whose party it is before anything else.
  • A headline, if you like“Ring in 2027,” “Goodbye 2026, hello 2027,” or simply “New Year’s Eve party.” It sets the tone in a few words.
  • When, with an end timeThe date, the start time and an end time. Guests juggle more than one party that night, and parents need to tell the babysitter when they’ll be back.
  • WhereThe place and the full address. A line about parking helps on a cold, busy night.
  • What to wearA dress code, if there is one: black tie optional, cocktail attire, something that sparkles, or come as you are.
  • Kids or adults onlySay it on the card: “Kids are very welcome” or “Adults only, please.” Otherwise parents have to ask, or guess.
  • Who to RSVP to, and by whenA name and a phone number or email, and a date about two weeks before the party, so you can plan food and drinks.

New Year’s Eve party invitation wording examples

Change the names, places and dates to your own. The first line is who’s hosting: on our cards it’s the Hosts field, printed as the card’s title, so the Location line needs only the place. Extra lines, like what to bring, go at the end.

New Year’s Eve party invitations

Pick a design and add the hosts, the time, the place, the dress code and whether kids are welcome.

Choose a design and write your own words on the card. Before you pay, you see a proof of both sides to check the text and layout. Colors may look slightly different on paper than on screen. Then we have your cards printed and shipped to you, or you buy a print-ready PDF to print yourself.

Common mistakes

  • Sending them too lateMany people settle their New Year’s Eve plans early. An invitation sent after Christmas finds most guests already busy.
  • No end timeGuests going on to another party, and parents paying a babysitter, want to know how long the night runs.
  • A dress code nobody can read“Dress up” means something different to everyone. “Cocktail attire,” “festive attire” or “black tie optional” tells guests what to wear.
  • Not saying whether kids are invitedNew Year’s Eve is a busy night for babysitters. Say it on the card, so parents can plan.
  • Forgetting the way homeA party that ends at 2:00 AM needs a line on parking, a ride home or a couch to sleep on.

When to send New Year’s Eve invitations

Send them three to four weeks before, in the first week of December, ahead of the holiday rush. For a gala or a party at a venue, send them four to six weeks ahead.

Ask for replies about two weeks before the party, so you know how much food, how many glasses and how many chairs you need.

Wording for the countdown

Most New Year’s Eve invitations promise the countdown in their first lines: “Ring in 2027 with us,” “Count down with us,” “Stay for the toast.” It tells guests the party runs past twelve.

With kids, an early countdown lets them celebrate and still get to bed. Many families count down with Eastern time: midnight in New York and Toronto is 9:00 PM on the West Coast.

Writing midnight on the card

On our cards, an end time of midnight prints in words: set Until to midnight and the card reads “9:00 PM – midnight,” which no guest mixes up with noon.

Most New Year’s Eve parties run past twelve anyway. An end time of 1:00 AM or 2:00 AM reads clearly and tells guests the party goes on after the countdown.

Dress codes for New Year’s Eve

“Black tie optional” means a tuxedo is welcome but a dark suit is fine, with a long dress or a dressy cocktail dress. “Cocktail attire” asks for a suit or a cocktail dress. “Festive attire” is cocktail attire with sparkle: sequins, velvet, gold.

For a game night or a family party, “come as you are” or “cozy” is enough. A theme, like something that sparkles, works best as the whole dress code, in one short line.

Kids welcome, or adults only?

Say it kindly and plainly. “Kids are very welcome” or “Adults only, please” goes in the Children line, which prints as a sentence of its own. For a family party, add the early countdown, so parents know the little ones get their moment.

For an adults-only party, send the invitations early: babysitters book up fast for New Year’s Eve.

Getting home

A party that ends at 1:00 AM needs a plan for the way home. Mention parking, offer a couch or a guest room, or ask guests to plan a safe ride home.

Have plenty of non-alcoholic drinks too: sparkling cider, mocktails, coffee after the countdown. Not everyone drinks, and some guests drive.

RSVP wording for a New Year’s Eve party

On our cards, the RSVP step writes the line for you: “Please RSVP by December 18, 2026 to Jessica at (555) 123-4567.” Set the date about two weeks before the party.

Name one person and give their phone number or email. Replies to “us” or to a group chat get lost in a busy December.

Making the invitation with us

Choose a New Year’s Eve design and type in the hosts. A headline is up to you: type your own, like “Goodbye 2026, hello 2027,” or leave it empty and the card says “New Year’s Eve.” Then add the date, the start time, an end time if you like, the place, the dress code and the Children line.

The hosts print as the card’s title, so Location needs only the place: “Our house,” or the venue’s name. Add the rest under Other details, or ask our design assistant to fit your own words onto the card.

You see a proof of both sides before you pay. You’re welcome to copy the examples on this page, wherever you make your invitations.

Holiday party invitation wording

Questions and answers

What do you write on a New Year’s Eve party invitation?

Who is hosting, the date, the start and end time, the place, the dress code, whether kids are welcome, and who to RSVP to by when. For example: “Jessica & Mark Allen invite you to ring in 2027 at our New Year’s Eve party, Thursday, December 31, 2026, 8:00 PM – 1:00 AM.”

When should you send New Year’s Eve invitations?

Three to four weeks before, in the first week of December, and four to six weeks ahead for a gala or a party at a venue. Ask for replies about two weeks before the party.

How do you write midnight on an invitation?

In words: “until midnight.” Our cards print an end time of midnight that way, so no guest mixes it up with noon. An end time after midnight, like 1:00 AM, reads clearly too.

What does black tie optional mean?

A tuxedo is welcome but not required: a dark suit is fine, with a long dress or a dressy cocktail dress.

How do you say adults only on an invitation?

Kindly and plainly: “Adults only, please.” Send it early, so parents have time to find a babysitter.
